Product Description
After being introduced in 1988, Contender Peach Tree quickly became a favorite for Northern gardeners who love its cold-hardiness and tolerance to late-spring frosts. Others fell in love with its marvelously melting, sweet, freestone fruits. The extra-juicy fruits are excellent for eating fresh and making into jams, baking into pies and desserts. They hold up well for canning, too. Contender Peach Tree produces high yields of peaches that ripen in mid August. While self-pollinating, it may produce even more fruit when grown with another peach. Zones 4-8

  • Fruit: Marvelously melting, sweet, yellow flesh. Extra-juicy freestone fruit. Freestone peach.
  • Growth Rate: Moderate.
  • Pruning: Second and third year pruning determines shape and prevents development of bad crotches. Pruning of fruit trees is best done during the dormant period. Summer pruning, except for the removal of water sprouts or "suckers", tends to weaken the trees. The first year the height of the lowest branches should be established by cutting off ones that grow lower down on the trunk than desired. The remaining side limbs may be shortened but retained, if well distributed. No more than two should be left that arise near any one point on the trunk because of the danger of crowding and splitting later on. Peaches bear fruit on one year old limbs. Prune in an open vase form. Avoid several limbs growing from nearly the same point on the trunk or weak crotches will result. Space the principal limbs out over as much area of the trunk as possible.
  • Form: Fruit, Fruit Tree, Peach, Standard Peach, Reachables Peach
  • Flowers: Single petals, bowl-shaped flowers.
  • Pollinator: Self pollinating.
  • Size: Reachables [R] 2-4 Ft
