Product Description

Floating row covers are available in two weights so you can choose the cold and frost protection best suited for your growing conditions. These garden covers are great for extending late harvests of fall crops like lettuce, spinach and chard by at least several weeks. In milder areas, the heavyweight floating covers could allow you to pick greens all winter. The row covers delay freezing of the soil, so you can leave carrots, turnips and other root crops in place and dig them as needed, well into icy weather. Our garden row covers do allow some sunlight to pass through as well as some air and water. Be sure to remove once the danger of frost is past, though, since garden covers can slow plant growth if left on too long. Remove floating row covers on warm days, too, to avoid heat buildup. For continued protection on warmer days (from insects, for example), rely on the Super-Lite Insect Barrier which can be used all summer without harming heat-sensitive plants. With care, row covers can be used for more than one season.

Standard Weight Row Covers are 0.6 oz./sq. yd and allow 70-80% of sunlight to pass through. They offer frost protection down to 28° F.

Heavy Weight Row Covers are 1.5 oz./sq. yd. and allow 40-50% of sunlight to penetrate. They offer frost protection down to 24° F. For extra protection, use two layers.

  • Can plants be left covered all day?
  • Because the row covers allow some sunlight, air and water to pass through, they can be left on during the day. Plant growth will slow if the covers are left on for several days. On warm days the covers should be removed, as heat can build up under them.

  • Do the row covers allow enough light in?
  • Row covers allow about 50% of sunlight to pass through to the plants. While the plants will grow under the covers, their growth will be slowed.

  • Can the row covers harm the plants if it touches them?
  • While the row covers generally won't harm plants if it touches them, heat can build up under the row covers on warm days. Heat build is more common with the heavier weight tunnels.

  • What are the floating row covers made of?
  • Floating row garden covers are made of polypropylene.
