Courtship of the Cardinal

In the spring and summer the cardinals become more aggressive making the most interesting spot to watch the bird feeder. Here we see a dramatic change in behavior of the male cardinal. Instead of chasing his mate from the feeding tray as he has been doing through the early winter, he begins bringing her choice bits of food. As he brings her a sunflower seed that he has shucked, she crouches with her beak open and wings quivering. Turning his head sideways, he places his offering in her mouth. The scene is almost an exact duplicate of what occurs when parents feed their young.
