Raised Beds: Getting the Most out of Your Purchase

For most gardeners, getting started with raised beds is easier and faster than creating a garden plot.

How to Set Up a Raised Bed -

Our Simple Solution Raised Bed and Grow Tub® Circular Bed require little to no setup. Building a raised bed takes a bit more planning, including selecting a site and purchasing lumber for the raised bed. Then, just follow the instructions that come with our supplies.

How to Prepare a Raised Bed -

Preparing our raised bed Grow Tub is super easy. Just add a good quality potting mix. For other raised beds, start by lining the raised bed floor. Lining the floor can suppress weeds and also keep out burrowing animals. For weed suppression, line the floor with landscape fabric or newspaper or cardboard. To keep out burrowing animals, use a stainless steel gopher mesh and staple it securely in place. Next, fill the bed with a soil mix that has plenty of organic matter. You can also mix in compost.

What to Grow in a Raised Garden Bed -

Because the soil in raised bed tends to be loose and well-drained, root vegetables like carrots, potatoes and onions thrive in them. Raised beds are also good for growing leafy greens and other crops that are planted in early spring. Usually the soil in raised beds is warmer and can be planted sooner than in traditional garden beds.

How to Plant a Raised Bed Garden -

When planting in raised beds, you'll follow many of the same gardening practices that you would for a traditional garden. Plan to test the soil and use mulch for weed suppression and to retain moisture in the soil. With raised bed gardening, you will be able to grow more plants, but watch overcrowding. Also, because the soil tends to drain better, you may need to water more frequently.
