Potatoes

Bake, boil, mash or fry, the possibilities are endless and delicious! Potatoes contain large amounts of vitamin C and B6 which protect against cell damage and promote a healthy heart. Most of the beneficial properties of potatoes are found in the skin!

Fun Fact

If exposed to sunlight, potatoes will photosynthesize and turn green. They can make you sick if you eat too many, so keep your potatoes dark and dry.

Sweet Potatoes

Simply bake sweet potatoes and enjoy! Also try mashing, cubing or shredding into various sweet and savory recipes. After harvesting, cure sweet potatoes in an area with high temperatures and high humidity for about a week. This process develops the sweet flavor and allows the potato to form a protective skin so that it can be stored at room temperature through the winter. Sweet potatoes are loaded with antioxidants and are high in beta-carotene and vitamins A and C. These heat-loving plants are carefree and easy to grow. Just be certain to plant once the soil has warmed up and all danger of frost has passed. Grow sweet potatoes on your patio in our unique, flexible Grow Tub® 20 Gallon.

What is the best type of fertilizer for growing potatoes?

Root Crops Alive!™ Fertilizer increases yields of garlic, onions, beets, carrots and potatoes which all need the support of soil that's rich in potassium and phosphorus!

Potato pests and diseases

Flea Beetle and Colorado Potato Beetle can be a problem in some areas. We recommend Pyola Insect Spray® and Bulls-Eye™ Bioinsecticide respectively. Do keep in mind that studies have shown that up to 40% of potato leaf surface can be eaten with only minimal impact on size and weight of harvested potatoes. Potato plants can compensate for leaf loss, so some insect damage is ok if you can live with it.
