Fertilizer for Gardens: Getting the Most out of Your Purchase

Knowing what fertilizer to use and when will help you make the most of your purchase.

Getting Started with Garden Fertilizer for your Fruits, Vegetables, and Flowers

Understanding key terms, available products and usage instructions are all keys to the success of your garden.

What is Plant Fertilizer

Often referred to as plant food, plant fertilizer refers to the mixture of chemicals, or in our case, naturally occurring matter that is used to enhance the growth of plants. Depending on what fertilizer you buy, it is added to the soil before, during or after planting. Garden fertilizers provide essential nutrients to developing flowers, trees, vegetables, fruits, and other edible plants.

What Garden Fertilizer to Use

All of our fertilizers have a unique purpose and are often plant-specific. See Choosing the Right Garden Fertilizer for Your Plants above for individual uses.

When to Apply Plant Food or Fertilizer to Your Garden

Whether you're choosing from our Alive! Fertilizers for sale or our other all-natural options, each plant food product has specific label instructions for how and when to apply.

How to Use Garden Fertilizer

Garden fertilizer application times and amounts can vary. For best results, follow label instructions for whatever plant food you choose to purchase.

What Do the Numbers on Fertilizer Mean?

N-P-K stands for the ratios of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. Nitrogen works to increase the plant's capacity to produce new stems, flowers and fruit. Phosphorus produces the oils and starch of a plant which provide strong root systems. Potassium helps build protein, fights off diseases and is also necessary for photosynthesis.

Our all-natural fertilizers have lower N-P-K ratios than synthetic fertilizers. Lower ratios delivered slowly over time are better than high ratios delivered all at once. Additionally, the nitrogen released from our natural fertilizer is up to 90% useable while synthetic fertilizer releases nitrogen that's only 40-60% usable.

Finally, our all-natural fertilizers will contain naturally occurring trace minerals—synthetic fertilizers only contain nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium.
