Eat them fresh, toss them into a salad or bake them into muffins and pies. Blueberries freeze well for later use so be sure to plant extra! As the deep blue color indicates, blueberries contain high levels of anthocyanins which may reduce the effects of aging and help to ward off cancer. Blueberries are cold hardy and highly productive plants. Their fall color display rivals any ornamental landscape plant. They are easy to grow but, for best productivity, maintain an acidic soil pH of about 5.0.
The waxy, silver-white film on blueberries is called "bloom". It serves as a barrier to insects and bacteria and helps seal in the fruit's moisture. It is also a sign that the berries are fresh.
