Blueberries

Blueberries from Gardens Alive!

Blueberries bushes are a favorite for home gardeners because they don't require a lot of space, can be grown in a container, are ornamental, produce nutritious fruits and are relatively easy to grow organically. Our pros at Gardens Alive! select blueberry bushes for sale that offer qualities such as cold hardiness, ease of growth, double cropping and flavorful berries.

Choosing the Right Blueberry Plants

Selecting the right blueberry plants is a key to successfully growing blueberries. When choosing from our blueberries for sale, first select ones that will grow in your hardiness zone. Next, determine whether you're going to grow your blueberry plants in the ground or in a container. Some of our smaller varieties of blueberry plants for sale are better suited for containers. Next choose blueberry plants with qualities that are most important to you. This could include berry size, yields and flavor.

Blueberry Bushes: Getting the Most out of Your Purchase

Because blueberry plants require well-drained, acidic soil, you may need to test your soil before planting. If your soil is not acidic enough, you can amend the soil with Gurney's Blueberry Success Mix or grow the blueberry bushes in a container (again we recommend using Blueberry Success Mix). Blueberries also require full sun (6 hours or more of direct sunlight daily). Selecting a site with the right soil conditions and plenty of sunlight will help you get the most out of your blueberry plants.

Getting Started with Blueberry Plants

Because blueberry bushes can be quite ornamental, with colorful fall foliage, many gardeners like to incorporate them into their flowerbeds or edible landscape. When planning for blueberry bushes, take into account their full height and spread.

When to Plant Blueberry Bushes

Blueberries can be planted in the spring or the fall. If planting bareroot plants, soak the roots in water for an hour before planting. Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots. Fill in the soil around the roots and water well.

Where to Plant Blueberry Bushes

Blueberry bushes are versatile and can be planted in the garden, in a flowerbed, as a hedge or in containers. They require acidic, well-drained soil, full sun and room to grow.

How to Prune Blueberry Bushes

For the first few years, blueberry plants do not require much pruning. Once they are established, pruning should be done in late winter when the plants are still in dormancy. This is a good time to remove dead and weak branches.

How Long will it take for Blueberry Bushes to Bear Fruit

During the first year or two after planting, pinch off the blossoms so the plant can put its energy into root and foliage growth. While you may enjoy small harvests after that time period, your blueberry plants will reach full production when they're about six years old. Feeding your blueberry bushes will help improve yields and lead to healthy growth. We recommend Blueberries Alive!™ Fertilizer. Back to Top
