A springtime classic and often the earliest vegetable ready for harvest. Asparagus is delicious when eaten fresh, grilled, steamed, sautéed or combined in a soup. Asparagus is an excellent source of antioxidants that protect cells from free radical damage. Harvest sparingly while plants are establishing or purchase medium- or giant-sized roots so that spears can be harvested sooner. Harvest should begin when the heads are tight and before the ferns start to emerge.
Once established, an asparagus plant will produce for 20 years or more in well-worked soil!
The Asparagus Beetle is a very common pest and requires daily hand removal or the application of Bulls-Eye™ Bioinsecticide.
