Description: Adult fly is slightly smaller than a common housefly. Apple maggots overwinter as pupae in the top 2-3" of soil. The adult flies emerge from early June to early September. Adult females do not lay eggs for the first 8-10 days after they emerge. Then they wander over apples, crabapples, plums and other crops, inserting eggs into fruit. White and yellow larvae, 1/4–3/8" long, hatch under the skin and tunnel throughout. Damage is almost impossible to cut out.

Solutions: Use kaolin clay which, when sprayed on fruit, forms a film barrier to deter pests from feeding and laying eggs. Spray kaolin clay on bean plants as soon as you notice the beetles. Repeat every 7-14 days. We recommend Surround At Home Crop Protectant. Dispose of fallen, maggot-infested fruit immediately. Use Ladd Apple Maggot Fly Trap with lure for mass trapping—one trap per dwarf, six traps per full-size tree.
