Instructions For Green Matter
For
Green Plant Matter
Compost Alive! contains 100% organic energy sources which
microorganisms need to decompose plant materials. The key to speeding
up nature's decomposition process is to be sure that the microorganisms
responsible for decomposition have plentiful energy sources, so that a
high carbon/nitrogen ratio does not develop. A high carbon/nitrogen
ratio will slow decomposition.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Start with an 8-10 inch layer of green plant matter (grass clippings,
freshly pulled weeds, etc.) 50% of compost material should be green
matter.
Sprinkle Compost Alive! over the layer. 1 1/2 cups should be adequate
for each layer of a bin, which measures 3ft. x 4ft.
Repeat the first two steps until you run out of plant matter.
Water with a hose of can, to the point of run-off.
Water again to the point of run off two days later.
Aerate or turn the compost pile every two weeks until ground is frozen.
If you have enough twigs of stems to create air pockets within the
pile, turning will not be necessary.
You will be amazed at how quickly you can make rich crumbly compost
without having to add soil, manure or lime. The heavy watering two days
after the first watering is important to rapid composting. Any foul
odors are a sure sign that the pile needs air. If bad odors develop,
turn the pile to aerate and add material that is more organic. Two lbs.
of Compost Alive! makes up to 15 bushels or 1000 pounds of compost.
